New Products In My Shop

I'm so happy that finally I have my new designs finished
and ready to share with the world.

I've had a terrible time getting tea towels from my
usual supplier due to the cotton shortage and price
rises but we've finally resolved it and here they are.

My 2012 Buy Local Calendar makes a come back; I'd
say it's become a tradition for many households.

Chobani

I have been a busy bee as you can tell from the lack of news here.
Finally I can share one of the projects I've been working on.

I was commissioned to create recipe Tips and Tricks for Chobani,
that lovely Greek yogurt that's become the hottest item in the
grocery store. I illustrated 6 tips in total and each one had
4 easy steps and a sample of the tools you need.
I was able to experiment with some new techniques and
really love the graphic simplicity of the hands in line holding
the objects in color and texture.

My Gorgeous Studio

Firstly I'd like to thank all the people that came out in the
cold, pouring rain on Saturday and shopped at Crafty Bastard.
Despite the weather, it was the best fair I've ever had
and lovely to get all my tea towels out there again.
I'm busy with my new towel designs including my
2012 Calendar towel and here's a sneak peek.

I'm extremely busy with some large commercial jobs that can't be
revealed yet but will share in a couple of weeks.
I've been working in my new studio and it's such a calm, inspiring space.

Crafty Bastard in DC

This weekend I'm making my annual pilgrimage down to Washington
for the great outdoor fair Crafty Bastard on Saturday October 1.
Nearly 200 designers and makers fill the outdoor space
in Adams Morgan and it's well worth a visit.
I have a brand new shipment of tea towels (which I've been out of
since April) and all my posters, prints and books so please pay me
a visit at booth 94.

I'm so happy to say that finally my Greenmarket Tomato poster
has arrived and is in stock. Thanks so much to everyone who has

Share a studio with me

I have some really exciting news that I'm moving my studio out
of my apartment and taking over the apartment downstairs.
It's an incredible opportunity to still be based at home
but separate my work space and it's a gorgeous sun drenched studio.

I need to rent out 2 private rooms which would make fantastic
studio or office space to a designer, architect, media business.
It would also be a great private yoga, massage therapy,
acupuncture and holistic space.

The whole space is $1400 and comprises of 2 rooms shown
below with a full kitchen, bathroom, WIFI, heat and hot water included.
I'm also offering to rent the 2 rooms individually - Room 1
is $900 and Room 2 is $500.
There is 24 hour access and it's located in the

Hurricane Irene Fundraiser

I'm back from my amazing month off and slowly
adjusting to the routines again.
I missed Hurricane Irene and gathered it blew over
New York, not causing much damage. However, counties in New York,
New Jersey, and Vermont have been declared "major disasters" by the
federal government.
An estimated 80% of Greenmarket farmers have been impacted,
with about 10% reporting severe loss—80-100% of their products.

There are ways you can help by donating to Grow NYC. For every $50
you give, you will receive one of my Greenmarket posters.
You can also buy them from my shop where $5 from every
purchase will be donated.

New work and Vacation Plans

As I pack my bags and meet work deadlines before my month long break,
I thought a post of my new work was long overdue.

I recently illustrated the homepage for Diaperkind, a cloth diaper
service for New York City. It was refreshing to move away from
food for a while and create a fantasy NYC community.

I've recently been commissioned to illustrate a Q & A section in Healthy Cooking
magazine every month. Here's the latest about what a diabetic truck driver
should eat on the road.

I also completed the second and last in the poster series for Grow NYC
on seasonal produce. I've loved creating these posters and
discovering ways to render the wonderful, textural qualities.
These will be available sometime soon in my shop.

And lastly, Food + Wine magazine asked me to create a new product
inspired by a seasonal recipe for their September issue. Sadly, I
just discovered the story changed direction and it didn't make it
in however, I love the way it looks and will be taking bespoke orders.

So, tomorrow we leave for England and France where I plan on
resting, eating amazing meals and relaxing in nature.
I'll be sketching so stay tuned for pictures when I return.

Drawn In

This month another beautiful book by the talented
Julia Rothman is out and available right here.
Entitled Drawn In, it takes it's format from her Book By Its Cover
blog that reviews all sorts of wonderful books from fine art,
children's, comics, handmade and sketchbooks.
Compiling spreads from 44 sketchbooks belonging to
fine artists, illustrators, graphic designers and cartoonists
the book is an inspiring peek into the world of the
artists mind and creative process.

Renegade Craft Fair

This weekend it's the return of the annual huge outdoors
Renegade Fair in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. If you've never been then
it's worth the trip to see over 300 artists selling their wares.

Penha Image Magazine

Last week I completed a few illustrations for a
new lifestyle magazine called Penha Image (Alma Media Publishing)
which caters to affluent, brand-conscious travelers across the
Caribbean and USA.

I was commissioned to do 3 illustrations highlighting Caribbean
fruits and vegetables alongside 2 recipes. Of course my
favorite subject matter and with a little bit of island traveling
under my belt I hope I achieved some authentic flavor.

Martha Stewart

In my last post I mentioned all the wonderful jobs I've been busy with
and today I can share one of these. A few months ago I was
commissioned to do several illustrations for Martha Stewart.

I did an advertorial piece for Ball, the company that makes the
jars for preserving and pickling. The illustration will be out
on the news stands later this month.
I also designed some jar label templates that you can
download from the site and use when you make your own
jam, jelly, chutney, relish or salsa.

New Projects

Wow, the past month has been crazy and I can't believe
it's been that long since I last wrote here-please forgive me.
And I wish I could share all the amazing news that's been
transpiring over here in my studio but I will say that I've never
drawn as much and felt so happy spending days
creating wonderful projects.

Some of these will be revealed in the next few weeks
and some further down the line but here's a taste
of what I've been doing.

1. Designing a Summer 2012 kitchen range for a major
National retailer.

2. Illustrations for 2 large National magazines hitting the
new stands June and July (I'll share one of these next week).

3. 10 illustrations of vegetables for a Norwegian soup brand.

4. Developing gift bag concepts with a large cosmetic company.

5. 2 more illustrations for magazines, one of which is a
brand new British food publication.

6. A limited edition screen print on wood for Food and Wine
magazine's September art issue.

7. Next in the variety poster series for Greenmarkets -
herbs - available in my shop end of June.

8. A Spring 2013 book with my dream publisher.

As you can see the deadlines are plentiful but I promise to pay
my blog a little more attention as I go.
And here are some images that won't all be published but I'd like to
share none-the-less.

Louisa Shafia is a chef and writer whose passion for seasonal food is shown in her

articles and book called Lucid Food. She asked me to redesign her logo.

I was commissioned by a lovely writer called Francie Latour to create a banner for her newly
launched blog about raising 3 biracial children in a small New England town.

Royal Fever Spreads

One of the reasons I've been a little quiet recently has been
the build up to the Royal Wedding taking place tomorrow.
With 500 Royal tea towels sold and stock completely
diminished I might even be able to sit with my crumpet and
cup of tea tomorrow to watch it.

West Elm and Terrain

As you know last week was pretty full for me
preparing for 2 large events and not to mention
shipping hundreds (literally) of Royal Wedding tea towels.
I also squeezed in an editorial illustration for Healthy Cooking
Magazine and will reveal this later.

Thursday night at West Elm was wonderful; a combination of
great people, funky music, flowing wine and truffles.
My line was received with so much warmth and appreciation so
I thank everyone for coming out.

Then on Friday I packed my bags and went to Philadelphia to catch up with
a friend I haven't seen in months. The following day we went to Terrain for
Brooklyn Day, a celebration of designers and foodies from my home borough.

I've been dying to visit Terrain ever since they started selling my
tea towels last Spring and the beauty of the place really caught my breath.

I was holding a stenciling workshop and had such a great experience
meeting a group of women who got stuck right in and experimented
with all sorts of techniques. We rummaged through the garbage and
found flower and leaf cuttings that became stamps.
They all walked away with their very own hand printed tea towels.

It's such a busy week for me as I prepare for my pop up
shop at West Elm tomorrow evening. Please come if you can

Then on Friday I'm off to Philadelphia for a great event on Saturday
at the fabulous Terrain. They're hosting a Brooklyn Day with events
and demonstrations. I will be there with my line and a table full of local
produce to draw. There will also be food events with Baked and
Early Bird Granola, Brooklyn Slate and McClure's Pickles.
And also crafting ideas from Knot & Bow and a trunk show
with Nightwood.

This is really one not to miss if you're in the area and worth a day trip
if you're not.

We went to Washington, DC this weekend to introduce the kids
to the wonderful museums and sites. It was a great trip and made

New Spring Tea Towels

Absence of new posts on my blog can only mean one thing
and that's that I'm super busy working on new projects.

I also decided last week that it was time to freshen up the
blog a bit and add some new features. You may have noticed
some new buttons on the right that direct readers to my
professional portfolio site and a more detailed list of the press
I've had in the past year.

I also thought it would be nice to reintroduce myself to my
devoted followers and new readers and offer some details
about my life, work, home, family and pastimes.
So, stay tuned for these in upcoming weeks.

In the meantime, I was in two minds whether I should share my new Spring
products as I go along or reveal them with a big fanfare when
they're ready to buy but I've decided a sneak peek would be nice.

I'll have these 2 tea towels available by April 1st, working on
some 18 x 24 screen printed posters and a journal.

New work from Claudia

Well, actually some old work that I rediscovered today.
Last year I embarked on a project recording my friends and their
houses intending to capture the corners and parts that make their
homes completely unique. Unfortunately (or fortunately), my product line took
over and this project went on the back burner.

I was experimenting with new techniques by using colored pencils
combining with texture and flat areas.
I think I need to visit this style somehow.

Greenmarket

Back in December I completed the first in a series of 3 posters
for Greenmarket/GrowNYC. It's a match made in heaven and I'm
really looking forward to a developing relationship with them.

February 1 Giveaway

I'm back in the swing of my monthly giveaways and will
be collaborating again with some fabulous designers.

On the first of every month I will be offering a 12x9 print
of our seasonal recipes from 2010.

Brooklyn chef Sung Uni Lee and we produced a seasonal recipe every month.
Sung designed the culinary side and I illustrated it.

Royal Wedding Tea Towel

Britain has a history of commemorating Royal events
with souvenir gifts and top of this list are tea towels.
With the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton
on April 29th I thought it would be fun to create a limited
edition of 100 tea towels as a special collectors piece.

Ici Coloring Book

Good morning.
While we're still on the subject of food and coloring books
I realized that I haven't shared a few projects that I did at the end of 2010.

I was contacted by Catherine, the owner of a lovely
Fort Greene restaurant called Ici. The food is all locally grown and
therefore the menu changes seasonally. They work exclusively
with local farms and markets.

We came up with the idea to produce a small coloring book that children
could color while having brunch at the weekend. Naturally it provides
insight into where their food is coming from and will hopefully
spark a little interest in eating healthily.
Catherine found some lovely soy based crayons to accompany it.

Anorak Magazine

There are few kid's publications out there that really "wow"
me but I always smile when Anorak newsletter arrives in my inbox.
Based in London, but available worldwide by subscription, the Anorak
team educate children using amazing design, games and stories.

I've finally come up for air following an incredibly busy

September Recipe

Today I'm happy to share some Fall delights from Sung Uni Lee
and myself. Apologies that September has just been posted
but chard is still at every farmers market so please try this simple
recipe.

I'm also selling these next 2 illustrations as prints in my shop.
Sung and I are also busy compiling the 12 months of recipes together
as a fabulous gift set for the holidays - stay tuned.

This recipe is a great crowd pleaser  during an Indian summer day when the glowing embers heating the grill  that make you nostalgic for a long summer sunsets.
The taste of grilled  greens is deep and satisfying, a cross between roasted nori (another  green vegetable) and potato chips; so kids chomp it up.
Cook the leaves  and stem separately because their different water content and texture require  different cooking times. Alternately, the stems can be used to grab  from the grill and pop these delicious snacks straight to your mouth.

1/2 bunch Swiss or Rainbow Chard, good for more mature chard with large leaves

1/4 C olive oil

1/3 C nutritional yeast
1/2 lemon, juiced

1/2 tsp salt

pepper to taste

Cut each stalk at the base of the leaf to separate leaves and stem.

Combine remaining ingredients and mix well.

With  a pastry brush of with your hands, spread a tsp of the mixture on the  front of the leaves. Stack leaves up when seasoned so that the underside  of
the layered leaves are also seasoned.

Toss the stems in  remaining mixture to grill or broil separately.
Due to their thickness  and water content, the stems take longer to cook and are chewier

On a grill or with broiler on high heat,
place several pieces for 2-3 minutes, until crispy

Remove from heat to serve, they are more crisp once cooled.

October Recipe

Are you like most people and hoard a plethora of condiments to  enhance your meals? Unfortunately, most commercially prepared condiments
are loaded with high fructose corn syrup.
In response, here's a quickie  recipe for a homemade ketchup that combines the ubiquitous condiments  of the plum sauce and good, old standard ketchup.
It's interesting to  note that the origin of ketchup is believed to be southeast Asia...so  east meets west meets east again.
Depending on the color of the key  ingredients such as the plum, tomato and the sweetener, the resultant  color can vary greatly, giving you a beautiful range of dark oranges to  maroon hues. Adjust the amount of spice depending on who's going to be  dipping their french fries into this tangy condiment. 

2 med-large tomatoes

4 plums

1 large onion, medium dice

4 garlic cloves

1 tsp, coriander powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp mustard seed

1 tsp allspice

1 medium spice chili pepper

1 tsp salt or to taste

4 TBSP sherry vinegar

4 TBSP honey or molasses

Roughly chop all vegetables in preparation for cooking.
Dry roast spices in large stockpot for 2 minutes over medium high heat.
Add remaining ingredients, except honey and vinegar, and lower the flame to medium low heat. Cover with a good fitting lid.
Cook for 15 minutes when all the water from the fruit will be released. Add vinegar & honey, molasses, or maple syrup. The sweetener you use will affect the color and taste of the resultant condiment. Adjust salt to taste.
Cook uncovered for another 15-20 minutes to reduce liquid.
Turn off heat and let cool thoroughly, approximately 90 minutes.
Transfer to blender and liquify the mixture.
Transfer to glass jars and store in the fridge. Store for up to 4 weeks.
Make larger batches for canning or freezing.

Re:Form School Paintings

We had a fabulous weekend enjoying the amazing
work at the Re:Form School show. I hope that some of you
managed to visit and if you did would love to know
your thoughts.

My paintings were inspired by Alice Waters Edible Schoolyard
and the idea that every school child should have access to
fresh, locally grown produce.
I painted my illustrations on both bamboo and fallen palm leaf plates.
I wanted to emphasize the amount of waste that goes on
in school cafeterias across the US. Every day mounds of styrofoam
and plastic are emptied into giant garbage cans.

If only we could use sustainable materials to serve our children
balanced and nutritional meals.

The paintings that have not sold will be available in my store in the
following week.

Re:Form School

The lack of writing here can only mean one thing and that's
that I've been extremely productive and creative.
The most exciting of which is that I'm involved in this great
art show opening in New York on Saturday, October 9th.

Re:Form School is a REDU project which stands for rethinking, reforming and
rebuilding US education. It is a movement designed to expand and
encourage the national conversation around education reform.

Summer Tote Winner

I have been so absent this month with wonderful family trips

Grilled Peaches with Ice Cream

And finally for the summer this delicious dessert that
can be assembled quickly on a BBQ or on the stove.

This is a great dessert for a grill to warm up the tender, melt-in-your-mouth flesh

of one of the seasons most unique fruits.

Pair this with a simple vanilla ice cream and you'll have an

unforgettable dessert to rock out at any gathering.

* 4 large ripe freestone peaches

* 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

* 1/4 cup brown sugar

* 1/4 cup dark rum

* 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

* 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

* vanilla ice cream for serving

* Heat up a syrup by combining all ingredients in a fireproof saucepan,

except for the peaches, on the grill (5 min)

* Meanwhile, cut peaches in half and remove seeds

* Baste peaches and put on the grill, cook on both sides for 4-5 minutes

* Place peaches, some extra syrup and scoop of ice cream to serve

Zucchini Pasta with Blue Cheese Pesto

Next up on our summer menu is this ridiculously simple
but ever so tasty entree.

This dish matches the blue cheese with watercress, a uniquely inspired pesto for room temperature pasta dishes and blanched vegetables.

The pasta in this dish is really shredded zucchini that has been "cooked" with salt,

so its a great dish for people who want to cut down on starch.

If this still tastes too raw for you, you can quickly cook the zucchini over or with a quick saute.

"Pesto" in Italian means bruised, so get out your mortar and pestle and smash away. Otherwise, carefully combine ingredients in the order suggested for a creamy, tangy sauce for a dish that keeps you cool in the hottest weather.

Zucchini Pasta

* 4-6 large green zucchini

* 1 tsp of salt per zucchini (approximately)

* use a mandolin or grater to create thin strips of vegetable

* salt liberally and let sit overnight.

the reaction of the salt and vegetable, makes the vegetable more malleable,

so it acts like a pasta

* rinse the zucchini in a little running water,

squeeze excess water in batches with your hand

Blue Cheese Pesto

* 3 cloves garlic

* 2 tbsp pine nuts

* 1/2 cup watercress

* 3 tbsp blue cheese

* extra virgin olive oil (approx 1/4 cup)

* salt and pepper to taste

* Dry roast (no oil added) pine nuts on an hot skillet for 2 minutes or until golden brown. Stir constantly to avoid burning. Let cool.

* Put the garlic and pine nuts into a food processor and blend until all pieces are uniform.

* Add the watercress until leaves are finely chopped.

* Add cheese, then blend while drizzling olive oil into the mixture until a creamy consistency.

Sour Cherry Soup

After a brief hiatus, we're back in the kitchen with Sung.
This month we're combining our ingredients from June, July
and August to create 3 delicious courses.

First up is a refreshing entree.

This recipe is based on a traditional Hungarian recipe using tart Morello cherries and sour cream and is served as an appetizer. The modification is using yogurt and also blending the soup instead of cooking the cherries. Most of the work comes from pitting fresh cherries, but if pitted frozen cherries work just as well.

* 1 lb. fresh cherries

* 1 lemon, zest and juice

* 1/2 tsp salt

* 1/2 tsp tarragon

* 1 C yogurt

* 1 C water

* 1 tsp of agave nectar

Directions:

- Rinse and pit cherries, reserve some for garnish

- Zest lemon with fine grater then extract juice from the lemon

- Add all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth

- Garnish with a thin stream of yogurt ladled with a spoon,

then add a whole cherry or two.

Terrain is located within Styer's, a gorgeous garden center just outside of Philadelphia.

Anna Betts

It's safe to say that I have really neglected my blog over the last few weeks
and as I scramble to keep achieving everything I set out to do I just never seem
to make it here. It will certainly pay off when my next set of products are launched
next month and hopefully my childrens book project moves into the next stage.

So, here's some work by Anna Betts who is an illustration
student from Cambridge, England. Her blog is certainly worth checking out.
And here are some illustrations from an ongoing university project where
she's traveled the world with her illustrations following the path her
grandfather took as a tobacco trader from the 1960's-80's.
The result so far are these beautifully simple drawings evocative of
1960's travel posters.

Events This Weekend

Tomorrow all our hard work comes to fruition as the NewNew house
on Governors Island opens to the public. We will be open from
June 4th - September 5th when the island is open to the public.
Our press party was yesterday and Eyewitness News spent a happy
hour filming and interviewing so look for us over here.

May Recipe

This month and for the remainder of the Summer we will be
publishing one recipe instead of 2 mid month.
We'll be making an extra effort to incorporate as many of the
month's ingredients as possible.

So, without further ado, Sung has come up with this beautiful
salad to brighten up any table and tantalize your taste buds.

Salad May I with Sweet Yogurt Dressing

The month of May offers some outstanding seasonal vegetables with a unique combination of
taste, color, and health benefits.
Detoxifying asparagus stalks shoot up like mini-monuments to the sun.
Rhubarb's ruby red stalks (the leaves are poisonous) balance stomach acid
and help with indigestion offering a tartness that trumps a barrel of lemons.
Dainty radishes enliven with a spicy punch in a deceptively beautiful package.
Eating any combination of these in a salad, especially in their raw state,
sends the refreshing breeze of spring days through your digestive and circulatory systems.

Ingredients:
4 cups baby spring greens, rinsed
1 stalk (or less) rhubarb, cut into small pieces
6 radishes, quartered or sliced into thin rounds
6 stalks asparagus, blanched or raw, cut on the bias
1/4 cup nuts (pistachio, pecan, walnut) coarsely chopped

Dressing:
1/2 cup yogurt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp maple syrup
1/2 lemon, juiced
fresh mint leaves (chopped)

Directions:
Clean & cut salad ingredients as indicated by the recipe
Whisk together ingredients for the dressing in mixing bowl
Drizzle over veggies and serve immediately

Governors Island This Summer

I've been busy planning another fabulous market however this one
continues from June 5th through September 6th on Governors Island.

I'm part of a wonderful team of independent etsy artists
known as the NewNew and we've rallied together to take over one of the
Governors houses on the Island and set up shop.
It's going to be a truly great 3 months with special events and one-of-a-kind
products being made.
Needless to say I've produced a Governors Island tea towel and print.
It was such fun scouring the web for historical figures and icons.

This mix of powerful antioxidants also known as za'atar, is reputed to awaken the mind. Middle eastern cultures encourage their children to eat pita with this spice mix before exams. Moreover, thyme encourages the flow of digestive juices to your stomach, so it’s a great to start a meal or even to start the day. Use this versatile mix as a dip for bread and fresh veggies; sprinkled on meats, eggs, and salads; or coat a log of tangy goat cheese to create herbed rounds.

* 1/2 cup thyme
* 1/4 cup marjoram or oregano
* 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
* 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Directions

1. Toast sesame seeds on skillet over medium high heat until slightly golden.
Set aside to cool.
2. Carefully take leaves off thyme and marjoram off the woody stems.
3. Combine all ingredients in a mortar or food processor
(with a few quick pulses) to create a slightly damp mixture.
4. Place in an airtight container; can be refrigerated for up to 2 months.

New Work

Here in New York we've just emerged from 3 days of
solid April Showers. As we know this brings May flowers
and seeing the blossoms appearing on trees and plants
I made this piece. It sums up a moment in Central Park
when the cherry blossom springs to life.

Sarah Anderson

I've just discovered the work of illustrator Sarah Anderson.
She's recently started her etsy shop to raise funds for her daughter's
overseas trip to France. I love her foxes which link nicely to the pop
up fox of yesterday.

I also can't believe I haven't raved about Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr Fox"
yet which I've seen twice. The man's a genius. It's beautiful in every way
and I like Sarah's homage to it.

1 Canoe 2 and Aurélie Guillerey

Good morning. On this really dreary Monday in Brooklyn
I'd like to add some sparkle by showing 2 great 3D projects.

First up is the design duo 1 Canoe 2 who are based out of Missouri.
They make wonderful woodcut and letterpress prints from their barn.
They recently produced this great letterpress paper house kit called
Chandler Lane.

And next is the lovely work of French illustrator Aurelie Guillerey.
These pop up pages were produced for the magazine "Les Belles Histoires" by Bayard .

Simon Peplow

After my post last week about The Exquisite Book
I started thinking about all the other illustrators who are
involved and I'll hopefully get to meet at the grand launch party
in the Fall. I have admired a lot of these artists for some time now
and again am super happy to be in such great company.

One such illustrator is Simon Peplow who's beautifully simple
illustrations have appeared in many a publication worldwide.
Here is a glimpse of his work.

And I apologize if my blog has felt a little neglected recently.
I assure that there will be some surprises coming up soon -
